When we first got the five pigs in June, I was nervous. They ate SO much and I was worried we would be spending tons of money on supplementing their feed. But after community networking and finding food waste streams, we have been able to recycle SO much food waste. Over the summer we were getting a lot of juice pulp from local juicery. We have a couple trash cans in the back of their place and pick it up once a week. It is A LOT of juice pulp. The pigs love it!

More recently, another waste stream has been identified. I wont be naming names on this for discretion, but picking up fish scraps weekly became a valuable source of nutrients for our pigs.

Thankfully, my partner has a large truck bed, and we are able to run around once a week and pick up nutrient dense food waste that is in considerably great shape. Not even moldy. It feels good that we are preventing tons of food waste from going into landfills and feeding our pigs at the same time! With lots of local food as well!

“An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.”
