Pigs are omnivores and they have a single chambered stomachs like us. They are not ruminants, like cows or goats. Pigs don’t readily digest cellulose. The term ‘pasture raised pork’ can be misleading to some who don’t pin the word with just raising them on pasture. If pigs solely grazed grass and had no other food source they would starve or be emaciated once it came to harvest. As long as there is another food source, lard pigs are different because they have different metabolisms. They get fat so easily and don’t need as much protein in their diet, which means grazing is more suitable for them. Our Guinea Hogs are lard pigs, which means they can get fat really easily. They thrive on high fiber diets and low protein diets. Letting them graze is a good way to balance their diet and they seem to enjoy it. Although its not their first choice, everybody needs a little green diversity in their diet.
