For a bit now we have been getting fish scraps once a week from a local fishery and feeding them to the pigs. It is a good source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. It is used more so as a supplement rather than a constant food source.

Does Fish change the flavor of your pork? YES… It is highly cautioned not to feed your finishing hogs fish for AT LEAST 6 weeks before the harvest. There have been many accounts of people’s pork tasting like rotting fish! Yuck. I stopped feeding the two Males (who I am focusing on) fish to prepare for the upcoming harvest. A pigs fat can accumulate the oils of what it has consumed. So for example, if a pig is primarily acorn fed, its fat will taste like acorns due to the high oil content within them. If a pig is consuming fish, the fat will taste fishing due to the oil. I have been calling breweries and other places looking for spent grain to help supplement their feed. Although spent grain is said to not be a well-rounded nutritional source, we wanted to try it out. So far no luck.
