Week 7 – A full week of harvesting, planting, seeding, and sun bathing.

Week 5 – A whopper of a week: rain, sun, rain again, sun again – a plant’s paradise

Week 3 – A sunny and full week at the community garden.

  • Fermented Plant Juice (not for drinking…) made with bamboo, stinging nettle, comfrey, grass, & angelica.
We all rocked it through a busy and highly productive week!

Week 2 – I can feel the summer just around the corner, I am very excited for warm weather and sunny days.

With seeds in dirt, Butch fat and happy, and communication at its clearest, there is no way I can’t enjoy myself!

Week 1 – Shishito Seeding – March 31st, 2021

  • Seeds settled in.
On the 31st of March, I seeded all 7 varieties of shishito peppers that were provided to me by NOVIC and CBN. Each variety came with 24 seeds meaning that there is the potential for 168 total pepper plants!! photos by caleb p.

Week 0 – Initial Bed Prep – March 26th, 2021

March 26th, 2021 – Bed Preparation done by BCS walk-behind tractor with tilling implement. I tilled half of our communal planting bed prior to the beginning of the Spring quarter to ensure we would have some usable planting space as early as possible; the other half of the communal bed will be no-till prepped so that comparisons may be made between the two throughout the growing season. Covering the bed with this black plastic tarp will raise the surface-soil temperature while keeping out sunlight that would allow any newly-germinated weed seeds to get established.

Week 0 – Comfrey – March 26th, 2021

March 26th, 2021 – Images taken of a Comfrey plant that was found thriving underneath the occultation tarp prior to tilling. While Comfrey is a wonderful plant capable of producing incredible amounts of biomass in a single growing season, having these plants within your planting beds can become a nuisance. Notice the girth and length of the roots that are quite prone to breaking when being manipulated; the chunks of roots that remain in the soil are more than likely to re-sprout new comfrey growth.
