I’ve just started my work. This whole project is sort of daunting for me as I have never made a zine before and am still in the beginning stages of learning how to use adobe illustrator. I’ve been watching lots of videos trying to teach myself how to use it but sometimes they’re just so boring I can’t watch them. Today I got the layout of the zine set up and wrote the first draft of my intro.

My plan for this zine is to speak to the connection between women, religion, and food. This intersection is one that I have resided at my whole life I feel. In all the books I have been reading, it seems as though many Jewish women throughout history have also set up shop there as well.

Jewish folk magic book (Pressman, 2021)

I’ve been finding lots of sources to help me with my work, the majority of them being very compelling. One that I am particularly excited about (and one I just picked up at the library today) is about Jewish folk magic. From what I’ve read in this book, and in others, Judaism for women at the turn of the nineteenth century was deeply rooted in folk tradition. Because they did not spend as much time in temple as men, they turned to religious practices outside of the synagogue. Much of this is rooted in food preparation and cooking lucky for me.

Standing at the beginning of the project looking forward can be a bit intimidating. It feels like there is a lot of work but at the same time it is so open ended that it feels foolish to freak out because I can make it whatever I want it to be. This is a subject I am so passionate about and have such a deep connection to that doing the work feels easy once I get into it. For me, when I’m studying something I’m deeply interested in I kinda go crazy and dig really deep.
