BBAU starts special yoga sessions for American students: American students connect with Indian yoga tradition
Suryoday Bharat News Service, Lucknow: Under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal, the Department of Yoga at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) is organizing special offline and online yoga practice sessions. Held in commemoration of the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026, the sessions follow the theme “Yoga: For Health, Knowledge, and World Peace.” This program is being conducted under an academic and cultural cooperation agreement between Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, and The Evergreen State College, Washington, USA.
In these special yoga practice sessions, 50 students from The Evergreen State College, Washington, USA, are being trained by BBAU, Lucknow, in the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), subtle exercises (Sukshma Vyayama), breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques. The objective of the program is to present the scientific, practical, and life-enhancing nature of yoga at an international level and to propagate it globally.
In his message, University Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal said that yoga is an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition of knowledge, which is offering a path of health, balance, and peace to the entire world today. He emphasized that the International Day of Yoga is not just an event, but a medium to realize the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). This international yoga initiative organized by the university for American students is a highly significant step toward promoting the Indian knowledge tradition, global cooperation, and holistic health awareness.
Dr. Deepeshwar Singh, Head of the Yoga Department, noted that while most countries across the world have adopted the physical aspect of yoga, yoga is not merely a process for physical health. True yoga is an integrated science of awareness involving the mind, body, and breath, which fosters the development of balance, concentration, emotional stability, and inner peace within an individual. He added that this initiative between educational institutions in India and the United States is a major milestone in presenting the holistic form of yoga globally, as well as strengthening cultural dialogue, health awareness, and international cooperation.
Alongside regular yoga practice, the participating students are also being introduced to the importance of stress management, a healthy lifestyle, concentration, and overall wellness. The university community has hailed this international collaboration as a major initiative to take yoga to the global stage in alignment with the spirit of the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026.
