Mission Statement (2021-2022)

The Evergreen Shellfish Garden and Appreciation Club is dedicated to the knowledge and education of the importance of shellfish to the local and global ecosystem. We focus on hands on experience, interacting with our local marine wildlife, and the appreciation of how sea life sustains the planet. We believe that having hands on experience allows people to connect to learning on a deeper level, and hope that with our dedication to our local ecosystem, we can help the people we come into contact with understand the broader importance of keeping our marine systems safe, healthy, diverse, and accessible. We will also focus on an understanding of what it means to be “sustainable,” studying the pros and cons of different forms of “sustainable fishing and eating” and conceiving a proper definition of sustainable learning, living, and being in our local marine ecosystems. We will prioritize indigenous voices in our definitions of sustainability, and set our sights on learning certain sustainable practices from local Indigenous peoples.
