I enjoyed the mixture of research based work and more personal memoir writing last quarter but wanted to do more. I wanted more creative freedom when it came to expressing thoughts on my own heritage and personal experiences. I feel as though with a zine, I can sort of flex my creative muscles and experiment.

Because I am taking on more work than last quarter, I wanted to give myself as much space as possible to try new things and see what could come out of it. I feel like the open ended nature of zines will lend itself to the many forms one’s own memories and reflections can take. I’m planning to include a lot of stuff: photos, prayers, drawings all alongside more straightforward research and food memoir writing. My own familial history can be foggy and exploring that, especially the life of my great grandmother, is something that I am really looking forward to. I want to take full advantage of the time and freedom I have and dig as deep as I can into my personal and historical background.

I want to come away from this project feeling as though I have created something that I both honors me and my own experiences as well as honoring the women I will be writing about and came from.

This quarter I wanted to do something different.
