Microgreens are small but that pack a lot of good into their small bodies, and they are delicious! I am always blown away the first time that I try a new microgreen as they almost always taste exactly like the end product that that crop usually ends up being harvested for at maturity. For instance, sunflower microgreens taste exactly like eating a bag of shelled sunflower seeds and radish-micros are spicy and funky, just like a ripe, red radish.

I started doing this while running a 20 member CSA to be an extra ‘add-on’ that members could buy at the box pick-up, bringing in a few extra dollars for me every week. They are rather easy to grow and can nearly be mass-produced within a small space. While seeds can be expensive, I was fortunate enough to have a friend that was willing to part with roughly 100lbs of various microgreen seeds such as sunflowers, mung beans, and peas.

This season I decided to revamp the microgreen business, diving in head-first to growing large amounts of greens throughout this growing season. Knowing that I wouldn’t have CSA members buying up the greens that I produce this season, I went around to a few businesses in the Olympia area to see if they would be interesting in buying for their business. With a more than a few no’s, I did have some success with a small butcher that just opened up; Delmonico’s Heritage Butcher is a butchery that sources more than 90% of their meat from within 30 miles of the Olympia area, and they have focused heavily on supporting other small/local businesses. Not only does Delmonicos provide incredible meat products, they also offer hot and cold sandwiches that are incredibly delicious. Thinking that they could use the micros as greens in their sandwiches, the owner and I agreed to set up a trade system in which I would receive in-store credit for the greens that they use and/or sell in their own shop.

As I dive into this side hustle, trying to diversify the microgreens that I have to offer, I am learning more and more about how to most effectively grow the different types of seeds. Whether it be soaking the seeds before planting, toying with the depth that the seeds are planted, or knowing how and when to harvest, there is much learning that I will have through the tried and trued method of trial and error!

If nothing else, I am happy have endless amounts of greens that I can share with my community as gifts and treats that add color, pizazz, and nutrition to our daily meals.

Various Stages of Microgreen growth

sparse peas

happy microgreen sandwhich

photos by Caleb P

Community Engagement – Personal Pros and Cons

Bio-dynamic Agri/food-culture

Evergreen Oyster Gardens

The Evergreen shellfish-gardens had one point been used by students to regularly farm shellfish, but have since been abandoned for years with no student interest to keep them alive and tended; but this is all changing! Through loads of help and dedication from many students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the shellfish gardens have begun being revamped. Nearly a year ago (2020) I was fortunate enough to get to help with reseeding the oyster garden where we seeded nearly 2500 tiny oyster babies.

During week 7, with a continuation of my good-fortune, I got to join in on the first harvest and tasting of the very same oysters that we had seeded only a year prior!! I truly believe that oysters are an iconic, integral, and influential part of the Pacific Northwest culture and I feel so honored to have gotten to witness some of my peer’s hard work turn into this incredible opportunity, an opportunity that holds so much importance and beauty.

Pacific Oyster, grown at Evergreen State College

Queen Emily Wilder, looking out at what she knows best: Coastlines & Shellfish

Greenhouse Management

An area of farming and gardening that has always brought me problems is the planning, timing, managing and tending involved in having a productive greenhouse. When a majority of the crops that we love to eat and grow are often started in a greenhouse and then transplanted into our fields, it is very important to have strong and hearty seedlings, and a lot of them.

In the past, there have been many aspects of greenhouse management that have left me wanting to have done better: ensuring that the seedlings get enough full-day sunlight so that they don’t grow long and weak in their search for sunlight, timing the watering/irrigation for the different crop’s needs, regulating temperature, and timing the plantings so that seedlings don’t become root-bound before being transplanted.

The first order of business was to build a greenhouse that was large enough to hold the amount of seedlings that I was anticipating, and having it located where it gets good light and isn’t too far out of the way. Having just moved to the property that I had farmed on the season prior, I had plenty of space (and plenty of necessity) for a semi-permanent greenhouse to be built. Even further, it would be located on the land that I was living (which is a first for me) meaning that I could check in on the plants with incredible ease, rather than having to commute multiple times a day!

With much pride, I was able to build a 100sqft greenhouse that gets the full-day’s sunlight, and I built it completely out of reclaimed materials, only spending 30 dollars for some miscellaneous hardware. Using palettes, scrap lumber, cinderblocks, and leftover greenhouse plastic, I was able to create a large space that could happily hold many trays of vegetable starts.

My greenhouse and seeding area

As much of my learning goes, trial and error has proven to lead me to effective greenhouse care, and up to this point I have had amazing success with the seeds that I have cared for in this tiny, yet large, greenhouse. All the crops that have been transplanted out into the field have been establishing quickly and show little signs of transplant stress, and they all look thick and healthy.

Having this space has not only been hugely convenient for my growing operations, it has brought a lot of catharsis into my mind and body. The act of caring for and being surrounded by hundreds of plants has been very soothing for me, and it gives me an outlet for some of my mental stresses that are ever-present in this day and age. By handling these beings, from seed to food, I feel wholly connected to them and have that much more appreciation for the work that goes into producing vegetables; and when I am ever feeling overloaded and down-trodden, I can just take a walk over to my greenhouse and revel in the beauty of the cycle and systems of plant growth!

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-3
