Building Community, Discovering Diverse Artists, and Shaping Our World through Games and Storytelling
Our Mission
Our goal is to produce engaging let’s play content for our viewers. To build a community around shared experiences and storytelling. Through that provide a signal boost for indie tabletop role playing games. Showcasing marginalized creators, and raise money for causes that support our diverse communities.
How we deliver
Playing for a Cause is a not-for-profit project where volunteers play tabletop roleplaying games on Twitch for charity. The games we play would ideally be short weekly one-shots that can be finished in a single streaming session. We may have more episodic style adventures should we run over, but the general goal is to limit runtime. This is so that viewers don’t need context for every single stream. Players may vary between sessions according to who’s available. To further implement our “why” into our activities, we intend to pick games themed around our cause. For example, if we picked a LGBTQ+ charity to support that month, we’d consider playing games like Thirsty Sword Lesbians.
Gameplay during the pandemic would be completely remote through Discord. Not everyone is comfortable with showing their faces so we plan to have a collaborative drawing canvas open during the stream. This gives our viewers something to focus on, while respecting out players limits. It will also shows our players’ thoughts throughout the game. Potentially organically creating materials for our games like maps and character concepts, acting like our “board.”
What sets us apart from other tabletop RPG streams is our commitment to charity. As far as we know, no other tabletop RPG channels exist solely for the sake of helping better the world we live in. Or offer a platform for game designers with lesser known works to show off there creations. Rather than offering streams solely as an escape from reality for our viewers, we want to tie our games to real world issues. Revenue would mainly be donation-based with the addition of advertisements on our website. In our beginning stages, 100% of donations would be going to charity.
Answering the Needs of Our Community
For many people the pandemic has been deeply isolating. and many are suffering from a lack of positive material to take up the long lockup days and a positive online community to spend lockdown with. At the same time it has been especially difficult for people from marginalized communities and artists. many people are spending less on art during the pandemic and discovery of new works in the tabletop roleplaying game scene has always been difficult in general. There has also been a growing understanding of the social issues and injustices of our moment, and a growing desire to find ways of making change within our communities. We hope to satisfy all these wants and needs with this project.
