On Monday, we worked on developing a strategic plan to keep us on track for the remainder of the quarter. This was achieved by drafting a calendar for the group moving forward. Although, it’s important to keep in mind that agricultural work is inherently dependent on the conditions of weather and community availability. On Friday, I collected a composite soil sample to drop off for Martha Rosemeyer’s soil analysis class. This soil analysis will give us some indication for specified conditions in our working field, MU # 7. Since this bed was previously managed for perennials, it is possible that the management unit soil is different than the combined composite soil test for MU #7,8, and 9.

Group meeting 05/15/2024. Eggplants were moved to the unheated greenhouse to acclimate to the outdoor environment in a process called hardening-off. Plants were inspected to find some, but less, aphids. Also, thrip larva, and leaf hopper damage. Although pest damage was present, it did not appear to be physically detrimental to any plant. It was decided that another Safer Soap application was necessary to prevent pest populations from causing further damage.

Drafting A Plan

Week 7:

Removal of Canada thistle and morning glory from the field using hand tools.
