This quarter I want to write a paper that describes the characteristics of Gilo’s with definitions of basic botanical terms when relevant. I also want this paper to be about the cultural aspects of Gilo’s and other cultural foods and why access to cultural foods is important. This paper ideally is a mix of entry level botany and public health two passions I want to ‘dig deep’ in at my time at evergreen and in this project.
So far this quarter I’ve supported this project with my art which is a continuation from last quarter. I am also contributing to field work and documentation of the plants. In the art department me and Aria have been working on making a sign for in front of our plot along with a newsletter post we hope to send to Marilyn.
With a new quarter comes new struggles. The paper I want to write has come with one main struggle. I am unsure of how to format it. While my initial thought was a literature review, I have realized that this might not be the best plan for me. Since this is my first large college project and my first independent research project in a college setting, I do need some assistance with this. I have alternative format ideas on my WordPress site. I am also slightly lost or intimidated by the many different routes we could take this project in the form of marketing. I would like guidance with this as well. This quarter, time management has been less of a problem. I have found that working in a group setting can be very helpful for me even if we are working on different tasks, it’s still a motivator for me. I have also found that this project has helped me narrow down my plans for the future. It helped me realize how much public health fascinates me and how much I want to find work in the public health area.
I plan on continuing research, art, education, and marketing. I also plan on continuing into the fall with this project. Gilo’s have taken over my heart! I want to also contribute more to the farm in the form of labor. Being in the dirt and knowing my work will go on to feed others gives me great satisfaction and overall, I want to learn more about not only basic farm chores but also the many interworking’s of the plants I will grow or help grow in the future.
