Title of ILC or Group Project: Hunger Among Students: Exploring Anti-Hunger Infrastructure Through Digital Reading

Program of Project Description

Narrative: In this ILC the student will engage in digital research and annotation work to further understand community food systems and anti-hunger infrastructure, and hypothesize solutions to food insecurity issues on campus using the thematic readings and hypothes.is digital annotation software. The student will use the “dive” metaphor from Jenea Cohens Sim Dive Surface to explore connections between food access and access to knowledge and academia. Readings will include “If All the Stores Close, We Need Food” by Rachel Warton, the introduction to Global Food Futures: Feeding the World in 2050 by Brian Gardener, “From Dirt” by Camile T. Dungy, and selected readings from Skim Dive Surface by Jenea Cohen and Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. At the end of the quarter the student will compile a document of their best suggestions for decreasing hunger on campus with supporting evidence from the readings.

Learning objective
ActivityDeliverable
To further my understanding of the applications of Hypothes.is and its uses in food studies.  I will read and annotate part 2 of Skim, Dive, Surface by Jenea Cohen to explore the uses and applications of hypothes.is and digital reading. This chapter explore the “dive” aspect of the analogy, expanding on connection, creativity, and contextualization. As I progress to researching and observing practical applications of food systems this “dive” metaphor will be in tandem with Hypothes.is to explore the connections between digital reading and food access. I will also use hypothes.is to annotate other thematic readings for the quarter. Weekly WordPress posts
To explore the effects of community food systems and anti-hunger infrastructure, and hypothesize ways in which we may decrease hunger at the Evergreen State College.  I will explore thematic readings relating to community food systems and anti-hunger infrastructure and its effect on related communities. I will highlight issues of socioeconomic discrepancies and hunger among students, and conceptualize solutions to food insecurity issues on campus. Weekly WordPress posts
