I chose recipes relevant to my studies abroad and wrote literary posts on my discoveries, including images, Instagram posts and notes on the process of choosing, researching, cooking and writing about each dish. The second portion of my ILC I planned to continue the work I did on my study abroad trip in Spring 2023 and complete a culinary journal, expanding research and organizing field notes into meaningful writing on the food, culture and travels through Spain. Using the information from this writing to expand into continued research through fall quarter 2023 and work with the writing center for support. This work will be posted to my ePortfolio in 5 posts, including text references, images and a bibliography. The Field to Flavor project I planned to work with the Agroecology Science and Practice: Market Farming and Community Gardening summer program to create a weekly meal for a “waste-free” lunch based on farm market stand leftovers. Using the program text, Tamar Adler’s An Everlasting Meal to guide and connect how to cook tasty community meals out of what is on hand keeping a journal of recipes.

What I did and what I learned:

I read through Roden’s book, a wealth of research, experience and knowledge, connecting each of her recipes with the land, people and her experiences. I chose recipes to cook based on the areas I traveled, and popular dishes with historical and cultural significance throughout Spain. I researched the ingredients and procured Spanish imported foods, as well as local foods I could use as substitutes. I recorded my process through notes and images, detailing my experience to cooking and to Roden’s work.

I completed my culinary journal of Spain. I gathered my field notes and previous writing and dug into themes and concepts, place, topic, recipe etc. I researched and immersed myself in these timelines and histories. I wrote a culinary journal in 5 literary posts to my ePortfolio including images and an extensive bibliography. I learned more about my writing process by intentionally practicing tools of writing and working with the Writing Center. I learned about the process of research, utilizing the librarians at school and my local libraries to help develop proficiency and accumulating this information gave me confidence in telling a story.

Farm for Field to Flavor I cooked 3 lunches using surplus produce tying my recipes to chapters in Tamar Adler’s An Everlasting Meal. I have gleaned many reassurances about my own cooking process as well as new ways to use everything in my kitchen and garden. This was experimental in discovering what was possible with a “no waste” food lab. I planned on preserving food and creating a pantry for the students which won’t happen this quarter. I am looking forward to more work on the farm in the Fall.

What I learned about my learning style:

This quarter I have been struggling with two questions; how do I honor or “get right” sharing stories of a culture and the hidden narratives within and why does my experience, view and voice matter? I kept getting stuck, what if I get it wrong, what if I miss a perspective that does not honor the people of this place? So, I became an observer of myself and my thought processes, decisions and patterns. I began to enjoy the work more; I love continuing discovery, building on an experience and having the opportunity to answer and evaluate the questions that are born out of understanding and curiosity. I didn’t see a connection between research, my experience and telling another’s story. Through research I discovered a confidence in sharing my experience in that place. Overwhelmed with information and a newfound confidence of how to express myself, I did not know how to process it all. Of course, by this time my inner voice is doubting I will ever get it right. When I could wrap my head around the work I ran out of time and wasn’t able to complete writing, or I posted writing that needed more revisions. I continued to observe, I do not “allow” myself the time it takes to write. The narrative in my head tells me I am supposed to be faster, and I pressure myself into timelines that don’t work. I don’t plan time to sit with my thoughts, digest information and utilize tools like journaling, art and movement. These actions have value and when I allow these practices to play into my work my writing is richer. I am elated to be immersed in an experiential learning journey and thrilled to be fulfilling a dream and yet I am still impatient with myself that I haven’t got it right yet – it still feels incomplete.

The question of why my experience, view and voice matters plays into me getting stuck as well. It stopped me many times last quarter and this quarter. During a writing center session my tutor told me a quote, and I apologize for not getting the source here, but I think it is important to include: “travel writing is an opportunity to share impact outside ourselves” This struck me. When we can share in this capacity, we are open to empathy, this matters, this gives me purpose and I look forward to continuing this work into next year.

Student or Group Info

Name(s): Jennifer Ball
Term: Summer 2023
Credits: 16
Title of ILC or Group Project: Tasting Spain; Cooking, Writing and Reasearch

Internship Info (if applicable)

Internship hours/wk:
Internship credits:
Academic credits:

Field Supervisor

Field supervisor:
Title:
Organization:

Subcontractor

Name:
Title:
Organization:

Program of Project Description

Narrative:

Learning objective

Activity

Deliverable

Cooking through Claudia Roden’s book The Food Of Spain to gain a hands on knowledge of the food, history and culture of Spain.

Cooking through Claudia Roden’s book The Food Of Spain to gain a hands on knowledge of the food, history and culture of Spain.

Weekly literary posts on a WordPress site of why the dish was chosen, what was discovered about the ingredients, taste, texture, history and importance of the dish.
