{"id":194,"date":"2023-05-03T22:19:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T22:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.evergreen.edu\/foodag-portfolio-sp23-arneson\/?p=194"},"modified":"2023-05-03T22:19:43","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T22:19:43","slug":"breakfast-with-grandpa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.evergreen.edu\/foodag-portfolio-sp23-arneson\/breakfast-with-grandpa\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakfast with Grandpa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-white-background-color has-background has-small-font-size\"><strong>Breakfast with Grandpa by lee \uc774 therese<\/strong>\n<em>in loving memory of my Grandpa, Jack\n\n<\/em>\nI emerge from the bedroom\n\t\tI am seven years old again\nallow my eyes to adjust to the light,\nthe sun dancing through the curtains.\nI step lightly,\nmind the creaking of the floors,\nmake my way through the cool hallway,\narrive in the kitchen\n&amp; there he is.\nIt\u2019s anytime between 4 &amp; 6AM.\nGrandpa sits at the table by the window\na mug of coffee by his side,\nthe steam rises\nfogs over his glasses.\nHe wears what he usually does;\na plain colored shirt\nthis one white\ndenim overalls\n&amp; a plaid flannel over it all.\nAs I watch him sit there\ndrinking his coffee\nlooking at the birds through the window\nlooking exactly the same as he did the day before\nI can\u2019t help but think\n\u201cthere he is,\nas if he never went to sleep.\u201d\nI walk over &amp; make myself known.\nGrandpa greets me as always\n\u201cMorning sweetheart.\u201d\nHis voice rumbles\nit reminds me of the crunching of gravel\n&amp; soft thunder.\nHe helps me get a bowl\npour in my cereal\nno milk, I ate my cereal dry back then\ngrab a spoon\n&amp; now we both sit at the table.\nI swing my feet,\ntoo short to touch the floor\n&amp; munch on my cereal\n&amp; he drinks his coffee.\nI mumble a random thought every now &amp; then\nas kids are want to do.\nI could never stand silences for long,\nI still can\u2019t, but I am learning.\nGrandpa dutifully answers back\nour voices soft so we don\u2019t wake the others.\nWe mostly sit in silence\nthe cold air slowly being cleared away by the furnace\n&amp; watch the world outside move\nor not move.\nWe sit\n&amp; the morning is good\n&amp; he is there\n&amp; I am seven years old\n&amp; the world is good.\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breakfast with Grandpa by lee \uc774 therese in loving memory of my Grandpa, Jack I emerge from the bedroom I am seven years old again allow my eyes to adjust to the light, the sun dancing through the curtains.
