My name is Ali Bailey and I’m working with Thurston Conservation District as a Community Outreach Intern for the Spring 2022 quarter. I’m a senior at Evergreen State College and will be graduating with a BS/BA in Ecology and Conservation in June 2022.
The District is a subdivision of the Washington state government that promotes non-regulatory and voluntary stewardship among private landowners in Thurston County. They offer conservation planning and technical assistance to agricultural producers through the Voluntary Stewardship Program, facilitate educational workshops for the community, run the South Sound FarmLink program to match aspiring farmers with available land, offer soil testing and equipment rentals, and cultivate partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders throughout the region to promote conservation and environmentally healthy management of agricultural lands.
This website will document my Food and Agriculture capstone experience with Thurston Conservation District and the readings that support my learning, as well as highlight the people, farms, organizations, and projects in the South Puget Sound that make up our diverse and thriving agricultural landscape. My work will focus on helping to plan and coordinate the 2022 South Puget Sound Regional Envirothon, designing outreach materials, supporting community workshops, improving accessibility of the District website and online resources, preliminary research on agricultural plastic waste solutions, and taking lead on planning and coordinating an event for the Teens in Thurston high school volunteer group.
