This weeks readings from Dinner with Darwin has made me think about Finns and domestication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did the Finnish domesticate the rye plant or did the rye plant domesticate them? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Since the rye plant grows and thrives in harsh climates, was it this plant that domesticated the Finnish and the food they eat? Rye is one of the staple crops in Finland. Is this a coincidence that the Fins have relied so heavily on this crop that once was a weed? If it was not for this hearty crop, would the Finnish cuisine be far different and be lacking in different types of breads?
